I’ve delved into my personal collection of vintage material to share with you a Saharet postcard from the early 1900’s.
Saharet was a dancer who moved from Australia to San Francisco when she was 14 years old and performed in sideshows and burlesques until she moved to New York City; making her name with a high-kicking dance routine that charmed the audience. Soon Saharet was acknowledged as one of the greatest high kickers in vaudeville.
This is an original scan of the postcard:
This is a cleaned up picture of Saharet:
- Saharet’s real name was Clarissa Campbell or Clarice Campbell (1879-1942); Her mother was a circus performer and her father a Scottish sailor.
- The initials G G Co. which can be seen in the bottom right-hand corner, is the name of the photographic publishers Martin Gerlach senior and his son Martin Gerlach junior.
