I’m so excited to share with you a collection of postcards on the subject of actors and actresses. This vintage delight of 102 postcards was a recent acquisition to add to my personal collection and over the coming days/weeks/months I’ll be posting my favourites. The 1st postcard shows English actress and singer Phyllis Dare (1890-1975) who was a famous performer in Edwardian musical comedy and other musical theatre.
In this particular postcard Phyllis portrays Mariana from The Lady of the Rose musical which she performed at the Daly’s Theatre in London from February to April 1922.
This is an original scan of the postcard:
This is my cleaned up picture of Phyllis:
Format: JPG
- Phyllis Dare was the younger sister of Zena Dare who was also an actress and singer.
- She was Born Phyllis Constance Haddie Dones in Chelsea, London.
- Like her sister Zena, Phyllis was a child star appearing on stage by the age of 9 – Zena appeared on stage by the age of 12.
The (silent) clip below are scenes featuring Phyllis Dare, Dave Fitzgibbon and Harry White dancing a fast Charleston from the play “The Lido Lady“, at the Gaiety theatre in London, 1926.
